A History of Central Point Baptist Church

On Sunday, June 5, 1932, a Presbyterian Minister, Rev. John Wright, met with families in the community to form a Sunday School in the “Foster Cabin” using Presbyterian literature—later, Baptist literature.

On October 30, 1932, a beautiful fall Sunday morning, the following persons met to organize a church: Rev. W.W. Bailey; Mrs. Dicie Bailey; Ades Bailey; Paul Bailey; Dan Blazier; Tom Blazier; Ida Blazier; Edna Blazier; Insley Blazier; Mrs. Eula Blazier; Hettie Bunch; J. Hobert Flynn; Mrs. Zola Flynn; Baxter Flynn; Paul Flynn; Josie Frye; James Hurst; Mrs. James Hurst; Tobe Hurst; John Hurst; Calvin Hutchinson; Trula Mae Ingle; W.L. Lyons; Mrs. Myrtle Lyons; Bernie Lyons; Bertie Shaver and Ruth Shelley. Seventeen of those attending had church letter in hand. Rev. W.W. Bailey was called as the first pastor and W.L. Lyon was the first Sunday School Superintendent.

On Sunday, November 20, 1932, a building committee was appointed. Land for a building site was donated by Zola and J. Hobart Flynn, and was centrally located from the following sister churches: Cedar Grove Baptist, Mt. Lebanon Baptist, Rockford Baptist, and Stock Creek Baptist. Thus the name, Central Point Baptist Church. Because of the community togetherness and giving of their time, material and free will labor, the first church building was erected with the first worship service on Sunday, December 17, 1933. This was truly a labor of love.

The Baptist Young Peoples Union (BYPU) was organized in 1934. In September, 1935, a surveyor was appointed to lay off the cemetery. The first Deacons, J. Hobart Flynn, Russell Myers, and Will Dunlap were ordained in September, 1936. The first Vacation Bible School was held in July, 1939. To provide for the Pastor and his family, a one family frame dwelling was built in 1948. In 1951, Sunday School rooms and overflow seating off the sanctuary were added. To continue with updating the church, hardwood flooring was installed in the sanctuary, and opera chairs were installed in the choir loft. A new piano was purchased in 1953 from Clark Brothers Piano Company, Knoxville, Tennessee, at a cost of $605.00.

In 1957, under the leadership of Rev. M. L. White, a building fund was established. Between the years of 1966 and 1967, Central Point Baptist Church gained a brick veneer exterior, and new windows with marbleized glass were installed. There was no more looking out the window and day dreaming, but keeping our thoughts on the Pastor's message and day dreaming of Heaven. The ultimate improvement in 1966 was the installation of bathrooms. In 1974, operation of the coal fired furnace ceased with the installment of central heat and air conditioning. In 1982, our Pastor and other speakers no longer had to strain their lungs to get our attention with the addition of a sound system. Since then, the sound system has been up-dated with state of the art equipment.

On Sunday night, July 10, 1983, the Church held its first Family Night. Family Night is currently held on the fifth Sunday night of the month. It is an opportunity to sing, read scripture, give testimonies or whatever the individual feels led by the Holy Spirit to do.

On October 25, 1983 the church was visited by “Satan-filled” person or persons. Entry to the Church was gained by using an axe to chop a hole in the basement classroom door. Fire extinguishers were emptied on the furniture, and various items of furniture were broken including the organ. The organ was shipped to the manufacturer and successfully repaired and is currently located in the new sanctuary. Total damages to Church property were approximately $20,000,00, and the crime was never solved.

The Church entered into a contract with Julian Millsaps, Contractor, on June 6, 1984, for complete renovation of the original sanctuary. The changes included level floor elevation, relocation of the choir loft, new lighting fixtures, and addition of a Baptistery. Carla Thomas, an art instructor at Heritage High School, painted a mural above the Baptistery.

During the 1984 sanctuary renovation, services were held under a tent located at the rear of the building. At the time of each service, the custodian and a helper would set-up rows of chairs in the tent, and re-locate the sound system. The piano was moved into the nursery classroom, and the window was opened enabling the congregation to hear the music, and allow the pianist to watch for direction from the choir director. While the tent was being used vandalism occurred. Extensive damage was done by cutting the canvas fabric.

A picnic pavilion was constructed in 1985, and served the church's recreational needs until September, 1997, at which time it was sold and dismantled by Eldon Jones enabling the areas to be developed for additional parking.

A cookbook of cherished family recipes was published by the ladies of the church in 1994. The cookbook was titled COOKING WITH CENTRAL POINT CONGREGATION. Over 1,000 copies were sold resulting in a profit of $6,800.00 which was placed in escrow for future furniture and equipment needs of the church. The proceeds were used as down payment on new church pews.

Musical talent abounds in the Central Point families. The first quartet glorified God through their harmonious voices. Central Point Mens Quartet consisting of; Frank Harrison, Baxter Flynn, Willie Myers, Tom Blazier and pianist Trula Myers sang together for over 50 years. Beulah Jett was the under study for this quartet, and Beulah Jett is the only living member today. Other groups followed:

  • A youth quartet comprised of the Jett siblings, Earl, Jr.; Robin; Kristi; and Eddie; who are great grandchildren of charter members Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Lyon; and grandchildren of charter member Bernie Lyon Jett was formed in 1986. Sandra Ammons served a pianist for the group.
  • “Foothills Quartet” was formed in 1993, and today consists of Gerald Hines, Jim Chapman, Joe Byrd, and Wayne Hood. The foothills Quartet Band members are Larry Smelcer, pianist; Ronna Smelcer, bass guitar; and Billy Young, guitar. The group continues to minister in music throughout the region.
  • “Happy Rhythm Quartet” comprised of David Troutt, Tim Troutt, Todd Troutt, Brett Hines and Bill Cupp was formed in 1994. The group successfully completed two projects.
  • “Higher Bound Quartet” has been singing since 1995. Members are David Troutt, Shila Mynatt Newman, Tim Troutt, and Kelly Hines Yates. Their first program entitled “Going Higher” was released in 1997.
  • “One Heart” a trio comprised of Casey Thomas, Angie Martin, and Darrell Nelson began their music ministry in 2005.
  • The most recent music ministry is that of “The Backwoods Quartet”. Casey Thomas, Darrell Nelson, David Troutt, and Shila Newman have been singing as a quartet since 2006.

The Children's Church Ministry began in May, 1997 under the direction of Tim Troutt. The “five minute Children's Church” was held in the altar area until the number of participants increased to the point of needing more room. At that time Children's Church was moved to the fellowship hall classroom. Again, the number of participants and age difference necessitated breaking Children's Church into two groups—TLC (age 3 to 5) and “Children's Church” (Kindergarten to 3 rd Grade). At the present time Children's Church meets in the educational building. Children's Ministries are under the direction of Rev. David Duckett and wife, Pat, as well as the TLC director, Patty Creswell. Over the past three years Children's Church has been able to minister to 242 different children with an average of 26 per Sunday.

The Golden Agers Senior Citizens Club met for their first meeting on Tuesday, May 5, 1998, in the fellowship hall of Central Point Baptist Church. This group was renamed The Legacy Builders in 2006 based on Psalms 71:18 which tells us “One Generation will declare Your works to another; they will tell of the Lord's mighty acts!” Our Seniors bear the responsibility to influence others spiritually, especially those of upcoming and future generations. To that end, they strive to live their lives to leave a legacy with the belief that it will bless many generations to come. Our Senior Adults provide a sense of history, identity, heritage and vital connections with our Heavenly Father. They teach us values and pass on traditions. They serve as our role models, teachers, nurturers and mentors. Our Senior Adults gird the foundation of our church, and desire to lead the way and live a legacy worth leaving.

On October 21, 1998, a contract was awarded to Jim McCammon Contractor for construction of a new sanctuary at a bid of $466,700.00. A special Ground Breaking Ceremony was held on Sunday, November 15, 1998. . Jim McCammon, contractor for construction of the new sanctuary, envisioned extra space which the architect did not include in the plan. Due to the elevation of the land, an area under the sanctuary would need to be backfilled. Rather than purchase fill dirt to fill the area, McCammon put in a basement area under the altar and choir loft. This area was unfinished. In August. 2002, the Church body voted to complete the basement area to house a choir room, and additional classrooms, and two restrooms. This area currently provides space for choir rehearsals, and the “Boiler Room Ministry”.

Wednesday, June 2, 1999, was our last weekly prayer meeting in the old sanctuary. The first worship service in the new sanctuary was on June 6, 1999. This was commemorated by a special service which included installing a time capsule located under the marble name plate on the outside front of the sanctuary. The time capsule is to be opened in 2049. A new grand piano was donated to the Church by the Flynn Family in memory of Baxter and Lula Flynn.

A point of interest in the new sanctuary is the lighted Cross above the Baptistery. The cross is draped with material with significant meaning. The material was donated by Jim McCammon, Contractor, and contains 12 vertical folds representing the 12 Disciples, and 3 horizontal folds representing the Trinity. Branches taken from a thorn cactus were soaked in water to soften them so that they could be formed into a crown for placement on top of the Cross representing the Crown of Thorns worn by Christ at his crucifixion.

On May 24, 2000, Rev. Chris Cupp was called as bi-vocational Pastor. He served in that capacity until November 7, 2001, at which time he was called as full-time Pastor. GOD has richly blessed Central Point Baptist Church under Pastor Cupp's leadership, the church has had 177 Baptisms since 2000. Average Sunday School attendance is now 217. Average worship service attendance is now 295.

A need for a Student Ministry was recognized in 2002. On June 5, 2002, under the direction of Kevin Roulette, a ministry for students in grades 6 to 12 began. In July, 2004, Jeff Sherman was elected director of the Student Ministry. Growth in participation resulted in the Church calling Rev. Jason Brackin as full-time Student Minister and Associate Pastor in November 2006. Various students have participated in an annual mission trip to Honduras, mission trip to Kentucky, and student retreat at Ridgecrest.

A church bus was purchased in December 2004. Shay Loveday operated the bus through the local community until it expanded to include the Meadowood Ministry in May 2006. The Meadowood Children's Church was also established in May 2006, under the direction of George Norton and David Morelock. In 2008 another bus was anonymously donated to Central Point with all praise and glory going to God!

Expansion of the Educational Building began June 2003 at a cost of $506,456.00 with Jim McCammon, Contractor. The addition provided classrooms along with a portion of the classrooms serving as additional fellowship hall space. This Education Building was dedicated in June 2004.

Doris Jett was instrumental in establishing a church library. In August 1978, a portable library was constructed by church member, Arthur Lewis, to house the books. Under the direction of Tammy Mosier, and with the help of several ladies of the church, they put together a state-of-art computerized catalog of over 2,500 volumes consisting of Bible studies, children's books and children's book series, biographies, fiction, non-fiction, CD's, DVD's, cassettes, VHS, and magazines. In March 2005, the new Church Library was dedicated. For the past two years the library has sponsored a Summer Reading Program.

It is our Christian mission to help others in need. In September 2005, several members of the Church made a trip to Birmingham, Alabama with a boxed truck load of supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims. A second trip soon followed to Collins, Mississippi with additional supplies for Hurricane victims.

In September 2006, the adjoining 15 acres was made available for the Church's consideration to continue the vision into the future. The Church purchased the property on January 8, 2007, at a cost of $425,000.00.

The newest ministry of the church began in 2007. Church members and local educators, Mike and Judy Pearson, envisioned a vegetable garden with a two fold purpose—providing food for families and a teaching tool for younger people to learn gardening and preserving food. Use of a two acre plot was granted by the Church, and is known as “Heavens Harvest” garden.

“Kids in Progress” under the direction of Lisa Huskey began September 2007, this is a program for children pre-school through 3 rd grade. The program's main focus is to build a Christian foundation on God's Word.

But above all these things of historical significance, it is the presentation of the Word of God to countless individuals, and the community over the past seven decades providing Hope for those in despair, Comfort for those with anxiety, and Preaching the Gospel that outlines the Way to obtain a fulfilled and everlasting life for which the Church is to be commended and remembered.
